If you’re new to heating oil, we realise that there is a lot to consider. So to clear things up, this section explains the basics of home heating oil, from what it actually is through to the delivery process.

Heating oil

Home heating oil usually comes in the form of kerosene, or 28-second oil. This is because it burns cleaner and more efficiently in home heating systems.

However, some heating systems run on gas oil. These are common in commercial and agricultural heating systems but a small number of home heating boilers use gas oil instead of kerosene.

Systems check list

You might like to give your system a once-over yourself. If so, follow this simple checklist:
1. Check which type of fuel is used in your home heating system
2. Check the capacity of your tank
3. Check the boiler type and age – does it need maintenance?
4. Check when the boiler was last serviced – is it due another service soon?
5. Check who serviced your boiler last – was it a registered engineer?

When you place an order with us, you will need to tell us which type of fuel you require and how much you need. Once we’ve discussed delivery and agreed a timescale that is convenient for you, the next time you’ll hear from us will be when we deliver your fuel.

Regular checks

To ensure your home heating system is running efficiently, keep an eye on it regularly. A little effort can save a lot of trouble.

We recommend you check your oil tank level every week, that way you should never run out - especially during those cold winter months!

Alternatively, you might want to consider our Signalman automatic monitoring system. The Signalman system monitors and reports your fuel tank level back to Askham regularly, so once your oil tank level becomes low, we automatically reorder for you.

Welcome packs

When you first purchase home heating oil from Askham, you’ll receive a customer welcome pack. This will include your account card and a folder for storing your delivery receipts.
